The new Medicaid, Mountain Health Choices, is rolling out in about 15 more counties. It is very important that you make sure that families know they need to watch for the packet of information to come and that they need to choose Enhanced in order to get all their benefits.
DAWG is working hard on this issue and needs your help.
The new Medicaid has already rolled out in Clay, Lincoln, and Upshur. I have already sent out flyers and surveys to Clay, Lincoln, and Upshur counties. In the next couple of weeks I will be getting them ready to go out to the other counties that just rolled out. In the mean time I could use your help.

If you get anything from Mountain Health Choices or about Mountain Health Choices, I need to see it. If you could make me a copy of everything including the envelopes the stuff comes in that would be really great. Of course you can mark out your name, address, case number, and any other identifying information. You can mail it to me at the address below. If you need a large envelope and stamps to mail it send me an email by clicking here Evelyn with your mailing address and I will send you out the envelope and stamps to mail it. If you don’t have access to a copy machine, you can send me the originals and I will make a copy and send it back to you.

Make sure and get the word out to your friends and neighbors that Mountain Health Choices is the new Medicaid program. Not to throw away any large white envelope from Mountain Health Choices thinking it is junk mail.
Let me know about any problems or issues that are coming up, like no help from DHHR or Mountain Health Choices in filling out the application, no one to answer questions, problems with doctors not signing the contract and truning it in on time, not being able to understand the packet that was sent to you or anything else. I want to hear any and all problems/issues related to this new Medicaid. No matter how small the problem is I want to know about it.

Well I am back from New York and my quarterly meeting with the National Center for Law and Economic Justice but as most of us still call it…..Welfare Law Center. I was going to make a hyper link to the Center but I couldn’t figure it out and don’t really have the patience tonight to try. As you can tell I am new to this whole blogging thing. How many of you out there knew today was Poverty Day? I sure didn’t until I got an email that was sent out by the Census Bureau. I thought when you was poor everyday was Poverty Day. Guess I was wrong. According to the Census Bureau the number of people in poverty has dropped from 12.6% to 12.3%. Wow, a whole big .3% Doesn’t mean much to you and me does it? I was poor before I got the email and I’m still poor after I got the email. I guess I just wasn’t one of those .3% that woke up this morning to find out they had won the lottery.

More then 40 million people in America, the wealthiest nation in the world, are currently threatened by a lack of health care, housing, adequate food, education, and living wages.At the second Poverty Truth Commission hosted by Union Theological Seminary on April 13, 2007 leaders from around the country testified to violations of their economic human rights that are and have been a direct result of living in poverty in the United States” I had the honor of representing DAWG at this historic event.
In addition to the Truth Commission, workshops were offered during the day.Morning sessions explored how and why religious leaders and other people of conscious are setting up Truth Commissions in the
US.They are drawing attention to stories of those whose lives are in jeopardy because of poverty.They are bringing attention to the dangerous conditions that lack of healthcare, safe housing, adequate food, education, and living wages can produce.
Afternoon sessions included panel discussions featuring poor people who are organizers in their communities and leaders in the fight for economic justice for poor people.The sessions explored ways in which these groups by joining together can play a vital role in the effort to build a movement to end poverty lead by poor people.
When Evelyn, DAWG’s Executive Director, spoke with the Seminary students on Jan. 11, they were moved by the same passion she conveys anytime she speaks about poverty in WV and DAWG’s work.She is the “voice of DAWG” that they wanted to bring to
New York to testify.I don’t feel comfortable speaking in public and Evelyn knows that.She wanted me to go anyway.I carried thoughts of insecurity and fear with me on the flight to New York.
How could I possibly be “the voice of DAWG”? How could I say everything Evelyn would have said?Going to
New York and testifying before the Poverty Truth Commission, telling my truth, changed me.It changed my life and I’m not sure how to put those feelings into words.I spoke better that day then I ever knew was possible.I started with WV statistics, struggling with saying it the “right way”.
Then when I started telling my story….Its not that I forgot to be “Evelyn”, to be “the voice of DAWG”.Its that I became me.I found my voice that day.I realized that Iwas the voice of DAWG just as much as Evelyn.That we are all the voice of DAWG.That anyone who lives in poverty in WV is the voice of DAWG.I’ve come to realize that by sharing my “truths” and the convictions that we all share……….that I represented the very purpose of DAWG.The very reason the organization exists.
I am Beth, Teen Coordinator for Teen DAWG, which is a project of Direct Action Welfare Group . I found out about the USSF and wanted to go. So I spoke with the Director of Direct Action Welfare Group, and told her that I would love to attend the US Social Forum.She told me if I found an adult DAWG member willing to go with me then I could go.I of course wanted to know why I couldn’t go on my own and she said “You can’t just send a nineteen year old girl from rural
West Virginia to something that big alone.” So she talked with Sondra, Treasurer on the DAWG board, about me wanting to go. Sondra immediately said she wanted to go too. Prior to the US Social Forum, I went to Philadelphia with Evelyn to meet with American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and speak about getting more youth involved in their work.Evelyn talked to AFSC about how she was trying to find funding for me and Sondra to attend the US Social Forum.Since we are the only poor people’s group in West Virginia, we felt it was a necessity for us to attend.AFSC decided to help us by giving us the majority of what it was going to cost for us to go.TheAppalachian Action Coalition and individual donors gave us the rest. Thanks to them we got to go to the very first USSF, had a roof over our heads and we had money to eat everyday…Only one thing when were we going to eat or sleep? There was so much going on, so many people, a lot of workshops, a ton of activities and marches. I lived off of coffee and what ever I could grab and eat on the go. I learned very quickly that trying to eat something that requires silverware and running to catch the MARTA train to the next workshop doesn’t work well.For the entire week we got up at , showered left our hotel, caught a shuttle bus to the airport got on the MARTA and went to our first workshop.Then we had to run back to the MARTA to get to the next workshop and returned exhausted late at night. After trying to find a computer and blog every night onTeen DAWG’s MySpace , I would go up to the room and crash into bed at about midnight if not later and get up the next morning and do it all again. We were lost all over Atlanta and they ain’t lying when they call it Hotlanta it’s really hot there. I went to a lot of workshops.One really sticks in my head.It was by the Welfare Queens.They are amazing. They tell their stories in a way that will get anyone’s attention, keep it and even after they are done you will think about it forever. They taught me to tell my story in a new more powerful way. I plan to teach the teens I work with, here in West Virginia, how to tell their stories. Because telling your story is one of the steps in the revolution and the teens of today will be the ones leading the revolution of tomorrow. If you ever get the chance to go to a workshop or performance of the Welfare Queens(Youtube) go its well worth it. I met a ton of interesting people working on all kinds of different issues, such as poverty, anti-war, and immigration. There were tons of youth groups and organizations talking about teen issues too. I even met some people talking about the revolution and I don’t mean the one when our country was born.I mean the one that is going to happen that will change the world as we know it. The revolution is already in the beginning stages as we change policies and speak out about the injustices we face everyday. Its coming. I can fill it. One day we will all join together and rise up as one united world. Take the power from those greedy politicians, who look down on us like we are not worthy of their time. Those well-to-do people, that don’t give a damn about nothing but themselves and making more money. We will knock them off their high horses and they will watch defenselessly as we take over giving every human being the rights they deserve. The right to true free speech, the right to affordable healthcare, the right to affordable housing, the right to a free education, the right to cross boarders without being arrested or worse shot.I am ready for the revolution….are you? The revolution will not be televised so be listening to what’s going on around you. And according to a workshop at the US Social Forum the revolution will not be funded. Want proof the revolution won’t be televised. How much did you see on the news about the US Social Forum? All I saw was Paris Hilton getting out of jail, who cares? I don’t…her getting out of jail is not even remotely important compared to what was going on in Atlanta. The USSF was the first big step to the revolution.There are still a lot of steps to climb but we are well on our way.I had a lot of fun in Atlanta, learned tons, networked with adults and teens from all over the world, and took the huge dive into the revolution.
